An evaluation of the narrow-band electromagnetic interference’s permissible level in the operating frequency band of an ultra-wideband radio wave detection tool for the meter wave range

Background. In radio wave detectors (RWDs) of VHF band, which are buried, methods of ultra-wideband (UWB) sounding are used to realize their positive qualities. An urgent task when using UWB probing signals is to ensure the stability of RWDs to external electromagnetic interference. The purpose of the work is to determine the level of permissible narrow-band electromagnetic interference of UWB of RWDs when organizing several frequency channels in the operating frequency band of the receiver, which can be turned off when exposed to narrow-band interference. Materials and methods. The article uses wellknown models of electromagnetic wave propagation in RWDs with buried antennas. Results. In the work, real filters of frequency channels are simulated, the amplitudes of the signals at the output of the filters are determined, and, taking into account the criterion for switching off channels, the permissible interference field strengths are determined when at least one frequency channel remains in operation. Comparison of admissible interference field strengths in RWDs with four frequency channels and in the usual single-channel RWD without the possibility of switching off the channels is made. The calculation results showed that the division of the operating frequency band of RWD receiver into frequency channels with the possibility of switching off each of them when exposed to interference makes it possible to increase the permissible interference field strength in the operating frequency band of RWD. Compared to a conventional single-channel receiver without the ability to turn off channels, this increase is more than an order of magnitude or more than two orders of magnitude depending on the frequency. Conclusions. An increase in the permissible level of narrow-band electromagnetic interference in a multichannel RWD is achieved by reducing the overlapping area of the frequency characteristics of the lowest and highest frequency filters by increasing the steepness of the slopes of their frequency characteristics or increasing their frequency spacing.
